How To Obtain Military Service Records
Posted July 24, 2003

Due to the passage of the 2003 military legislation, qualified candidates must submit military documentation along with a completed application form in order to purchase military service.  Several members are experiencing difficulty in obtaining their military records and as an attempt to assist our veterans the following additional information is provided:

According to the Louisiana National Guard Reserve Office, all branches of the military are considered federal status.  The branches of the Armed Forces consist of:

Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, National Guard, National Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, Army National Guard Reserve, Air National Guard, Air National Guard Reserve and Coast Guard.

The National Guard is classified as dual status.  It is federal, but can be used to support the State as called upon by the Governor.  Members do not earn retirement points when called by the Governor.

Retirement points are earned from inactive or active duty and are calculated as follows:

Inactive duty:

Members earn 1 retirement point per drill.  Weekend duty is comprised of 4 drills and members can earn up to 4 retirement points.  Statements of retirement points can be obtained from their military branch.

Active duty:

Members earn 1 point per day and usually consists of 15 active days per year.  If active duty is more than 90 days, service is reported on DD 214.

If service was in the Louisiana National Guard, members may obtain records of separation by completing the attached SF 180 form and submitting to:

Other military service records can be obtained as described on the following URL page:  http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st-louis/military_personnel_ records.html.  Then click on Standard Form 180.  Scroll for section titled “LOCATION OF MILITARY RECORDS”.

According to information on various websites, the turn around time for military records can be 14 to16 weeks.  Submitting electronic requests for military records could prove a faster response time.  It appears electronic requests are available by visiting the U.S. National Archives & Records Administration at Page URL:   http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/index.html
